# Depth maps for the photo parallax effect One greyscale depth map for each photo used by the 3D map page (`lab/3d-map`: the keys of `photos` in `map-data.js`, then the province-card, trending-tag and background-rotation photos in `data/provinces_content.json`): 81 maps. The file `.webp` belongs to the photo `../.jpg` and its resized copies in `../r/`. White is near, black is far. ## Files - `.webp`: 480 px wide, same aspect ratio as `../r/-960.webp`. Lossy WebP with R = G = B (WebP has no single-channel mode, so read any one channel). 1566-18678 bytes each, about 382 KB for all 81. - `index.json`: `{slug: {w, h, bytes, strength, focus, notes}}` - `strength` (0..1): recommended parallax strength. It is lower for photos with thin structures (towers, spires, poles, wires, bare branches, pine needles) or layers that are hard to separate. - `focus` (0..1): the depth value that should stay still, usually the main subject. - `notes`: what the reviewer saw in the QA previews. ## Using the maps `strength` and `focus` follow the convention of `lab/3d-map/depthcard.js` (`MAXD = 0.025`). Content at depth `d` moves by ``` offset = pointer * (d - focus) * strength * 0.025 / max(focus, 1 - focus) ``` in units of the image width, with `pointer` in [-1, 1] on each axis. At full pointer deflection, the depth farthest from `focus` moves `strength * 2.5 %` of the width, whatever the focus. Zoom the photo in slightly (overscan) so the edges never sample outside it; `depthcard.js` uses 1.07. The maps are tuned for the recommended strength: the far side of every depth step is ramped, so the photo's background stretches a little next to a near object rather than the object's edge being doubled. A lower strength is always safe. A much higher one brings doubled edges back; in that case, re-run the script with a new strength. ## How the maps were made - Date: 2026-10-05. - Model: Depth Anything V2 Small (Lihe Yang et al., "Depth Anything V2", 2024), ONNX export `onnx-community/depth-anything-v2-small`, file `onnx/model.onnx` (fp32, 99,060,839 bytes), converted from `depth-anything/Depth-Anything-V2-Small`. - ONNX revision: `4472b7362082ad9968fee890ca0f1e5aca36b93d` - ONNX sha256: `afb6a5c28f3b6bf1618c6e43f02073ef9dfdc70e937502d51603e57b0a1df10c` - Base model revision: `03876f8651c73a60fe4c2c48294e09fcb6838fcf` - Model licence: Apache-2.0, as stated on both model cards (checked 2026-10-05). Only the Small model is Apache-2.0. The Base and Large models are CC BY-NC 4.0 (non-commercial) and must not be swapped in. - Runtime: onnxruntime 1.30.0 on CPU, numpy 2.5.3, Pillow 12.3.0, Python 3.12.4. - Input: the 2400 px original JPEG, resized (bicubic) so that the long side is 518 px and both sides are multiples of 14, with ImageNet mean/std normalisation. The model returns relative inverse depth (bigger = nearer). - Post-processing, all at output size: 1. Robust normalisation: percentiles 2 and 98 of each image map to 0 and 1 (near = white). 2. Sky flattening: pixels that are connected to the top edge, sky-coloured, low-texture and far are set to 0 (farthest). For one night photo on a near-black sky (`harbin-ice-snow-world-alt`), near-black flat pixels connected to the top are also treated as sky. For two photos with no sky, where a hillside fills the top edge (`fujian-tulou`, `jiuzhaigou-lake`), sky flattening is off. 3. Edge-aware smoothing: a guided filter (He, Sun, Tang 2010; radius 3 px, eps 0.001) whose guide is the photo's luminance and blue-red chroma plus the depth itself. Depth edges snap to photo edges without copying texture. 4. Near regions are dilated by 2 px (max filter), so foreground edges move with the foreground instead of tearing. 5. Slope limit: the far side of each depth step becomes a ramp no steeper than 0.9 / (shift in px per unit of depth at the recommended strength), so a plain backward-mapping shader cannot fold over. 6. Quantised to 8 bits and saved as lossy WebP (quality 95), with no file over 25 KB. - QA: for each photo, a contact sheet (photo | depth | two previews at full pointer deflection, rendered with a plain backward map, the worst case) was reviewed, and `strength` and `focus` were set per photo. Eight difficult photos were also checked at 3x zoom. The province and tag photos (second run, same day) were reviewed on photo | depth contact sheets, with the previews checked for the photos kept low. - Script: `tools/depth/make_depth.py` (its header explains how to re-run it). ## Licence The Apache-2.0 licence covers the model. It places no conditions on the maps the model produces. The terms for each map come from its photo: - Each depth map is an adaptation (derivative work) of the photo with the same slug, listed below with its author and source. It is a **modified** version: an estimated depth map computed from the photo by Highway New Time on 2026-10-05, not the photo itself. - Where the photo's licence is ShareAlike (CC BY-SA), the map is shared under the same licence as the photo. - Where the photo is CC BY, the map is shared under the same CC BY licence: credit the photo's author. - Where the photo is CC0, the map is CC0 1.0. Where the photo is in the public domain, no rights are claimed in the map. - Suggested credit line: "Depth map derived from by , , via Wikimedia Commons; modified (depth estimation) by Highway New Time, 2026-10-05."
